Grievance Training I - The Nuts & Bolts of the Grievance Process
The collective bargaining agreement is just a collection of empty promises unless and until the union has the skill and the power to maintain and enforce it. The extent to which we can deliver on this responsibility to maintain and enforce the contract, to a large extent, provides the answer to the perennial question that we hear from our members in one form or another, “What do I get for my dues?” Since the source of our power resides in our members’ involvement, members whose perspective on the above question is unclear or negative will generally not be in a mindset to help the union build its power through their active involvement. Consistent with the MTA’s Strategic Action Plan we are in the process of rethinking our approach in all areas, including, how to approach grievance processing to inspire the involvement of more members.
Due to the rapidity and complexity of new issues and problems confronting our members, in addition to topics and issues that we have traditionally covered in previous grievance workshops, we’ve updated the training to deal with the new environment. We’ll be discussing new tools and techniques to more effectively involve and advocate for our members, whether or not their issues fall within the four corners of the contract.
Register through MTA and cvent.com.

This one-day conference, brought to you by MTA’s New Member Committee targets teachers in their first four years as well as college students. Workshops include licensure, teaching English language learners, and legal basics. Attend morning and afternoon workshops, plus a luncheon with Secretary of Education Matt Malone. If you’re an educator in your first four years of teaching, the Just for New Teachers Conference is designed especially for you. While all teachers, novices and veterans alike, face many of the same daily challenges, the novice has fewer strategies to call upon. Whether it’s handling classroom management, or addressing the wide range of individual student needs in your classroom, or simply finding what to do next about your educator license, this conference has something for you. More Information and Registration are available through the MTA. The Conference fee ($60) will be reimbursed by RTA. Contact Mariregis or your building rep when you register. Since the conference is held on a Friday, you would need to request a Personal or Professional day. Friday - December 6, 2013 - 8:00 am to 3:00 pm Best Western Royal Plaza Hotel & Trade Center - 181 Boston Post Rd W - Marlborough, MA 01752

The MTA staff from the Lynnfield field office will be presenting this follow-up to the November Grievance I training. Grievance I is not a requirement; any member is welcome to attend. The RTA has only rarely had grievances pass beyond the informal level, but having a trained grievance committee apart from the executive board would be a valuable improvement to local capacity.
January 16, 2014 - 4:00 to 7:00 - Reading Memorial High School
62 Oakland Road - Distance Learning Center, 4th Floor - Reading, MA 01867
For the member who knows the basics (from either taking Grievance 1 or past experience) and is ready take the next step and become an advocate. Participants will leave this session with a deeper understanding of more complex skills associated with contract maintenance as well as when it is appropriate to utilize self-help methods for resolving issues that fall inside or outside of the contract. Topics covered in this advanced training include how to write grievances and present them to administrators and the basics of issue organizing. We will practice these skills with facts derived from actual cases and provide feedback to improve your skills.
Additional training dates are available through other field offices. The full list can be viewed on the registration page: http://www.cvent.com/events/mta-grievance-training-part-i-and-part-ii/event-summary-fbfec136a3d44456be29fe6e4728da5e.aspx Note that the Saturday sessions in Holyoke and Auburn include Grievance I training as well.

2019 MTA Ethnic Minority Affairs Committee Forums Wake Up! Break the Cycle of Racism was the theme of this year’s Ethnic Minority Affairs Committee Conference. NEA’s Global Learning Fellow, Gabriel Tanglao, led a workshop on Decolonizing Curriculum. The MTA Ethnic Minority Affairs Committee is hosting a series of forums during March and April to continue this discussion and ask, “What It Means to Decolonize the Curriculum.” - What does a colonized curriculum and/or structure look like? (Create a working definition of colonized curriculum/structure.)
- Is decolonizing necessary?
- Decolonizing vs. diversifying: Is there a difference?
- How has colonized curriculum shaped your education/work environment? How would your education/work environment have been changed if you had been taught a decolonized curriculum?
- Do you see your district/employer being supportive about decolonizing curriculum? If not, how can we get them on board? What are the barriers?
- As educators, what steps can we take to decolonize curriculum?
These questions will be discussed at these free forums. Now YOU can take part in furthering the exchange of ideas and formulating next steps.
Participants may earn 2.5 hours toward professional development points or PDPs. All attendees will receive a certificate of attendance.

Attached are the MTA/AFT/BTU proposals for statewide negotiations with DESE around reopening schools. These serve as the basis for statewide bargaining with Commissioner Riley as well as "non-negotiables" for our own bargaining in Revere. RTA eboard will be holding a zoom meeting on Wednesday at 3:30 to discuss and vote on whether to endorse these proposals. Come if you are able. The goal is to have these to present to our school committee and Central Office prior to the start of our own bargaining on July 23.
