Grievance Training I - The Nuts & Bolts of the Grievance Process
The collective bargaining agreement is just a collection of empty promises unless and until the union has the skill and the power to maintain and enforce it. The extent to which we can deliver on this responsibility to maintain and enforce the contract, to a large extent, provides the answer to the perennial question that we hear from our members in one form or another, “What do I get for my dues?” Since the source of our power resides in our members’ involvement, members whose perspective on the above question is unclear or negative will generally not be in a mindset to help the union build its power through their active involvement. Consistent with the MTA’s Strategic Action Plan we are in the process of rethinking our approach in all areas, including, how to approach grievance processing to inspire the involvement of more members.
Due to the rapidity and complexity of new issues and problems confronting our members, in addition to topics and issues that we have traditionally covered in previous grievance workshops, we’ve updated the training to deal with the new environment. We’ll be discussing new tools and techniques to more effectively involve and advocate for our members, whether or not their issues fall within the four corners of the contract.
Register through MTA and cvent.com.

This one-day conference, brought to you by MTA’s New Member Committee targets teachers in their first four years as well as college students. Workshops include licensure, teaching English language learners, and legal basics. Attend morning and afternoon workshops, plus a luncheon with Secretary of Education Matt Malone. If you’re an educator in your first four years of teaching, the Just for New Teachers Conference is designed especially for you. While all teachers, novices and veterans alike, face many of the same daily challenges, the novice has fewer strategies to call upon. Whether it’s handling classroom management, or addressing the wide range of individual student needs in your classroom, or simply finding what to do next about your educator license, this conference has something for you. More Information and Registration are available through the MTA. The Conference fee ($60) will be reimbursed by RTA. Contact Mariregis or your building rep when you register. Since the conference is held on a Friday, you would need to request a Personal or Professional day. Friday - December 6, 2013 - 8:00 am to 3:00 pm Best Western Royal Plaza Hotel & Trade Center - 181 Boston Post Rd W - Marlborough, MA 01752
