2019 MTA Ethnic Minority Affairs Committee Forums Wake Up! Break the Cycle of Racism was the theme of this year’s Ethnic Minority Affairs Committee Conference. NEA’s Global Learning Fellow, Gabriel Tanglao, led a workshop on Decolonizing Curriculum. The MTA Ethnic Minority Affairs Committee is hosting a series of forums during March and April to continue this discussion and ask, “What It Means to Decolonize the Curriculum.” - What does a colonized curriculum and/or structure look like? (Create a working definition of colonized curriculum/structure.)
- Is decolonizing necessary?
- Decolonizing vs. diversifying: Is there a difference?
- How has colonized curriculum shaped your education/work environment? How would your education/work environment have been changed if you had been taught a decolonized curriculum?
- Do you see your district/employer being supportive about decolonizing curriculum? If not, how can we get them on board? What are the barriers?
- As educators, what steps can we take to decolonize curriculum?
These questions will be discussed at these free forums. Now YOU can take part in furthering the exchange of ideas and formulating next steps.
Participants may earn 2.5 hours toward professional development points or PDPs. All attendees will receive a certificate of attendance.
